Quetzaltenango est la seconde plus...

Quetzaltenango est la seconde plus grande ville du Guatemala. Elle se trouve dans la partie ouest du pays, en route vers la frontière avec le Mexique si l’on vient de la capitale ou d’Antigua Guatemala. C’est une ville superbe, toujours très traditionnelle malgré ses 130 000 habitantes, elle a su conserver une forte identité maya. La population de Xela, le surnom de Quetzaltenango, bien plus facile a retenir, est en majorité Quiché, et un peu Mam. On entend ces deux langues mayas en se promenant sur les marchés, les gens portent toujours les habits typiques, surtout les femmes car les hommes l’abandonnent pour les jeans petit à petit.

A Xela, arrivent beaucoup de voyageurs qui y restent entre 2 et 8 semaines pour apprendre l’espagnol dans les nombreuses écoles de langue de la ville, qui de par sa taille offre de tout, et a la réputation d’être bien plus tranquille et agréable que la capitale.
Ensuite il y a les volontaires, qui travaillent dans le domaine de la santé ou de l’éducation dans les villages alentours, mais se logent a Xela pour avoir un peu de vie sociale durant la soirée. On est a trois heures de bus de Guatemala Ciudad.
