Féodal sur son éminence

Les ruines féodales ont fière allure et marquent fortement le site du bourg de Châteaurenard.
Le seigneur Raynardus qui donna son nom à la cité n'avait qu'un château de bois. Ce sont les comtes de Provence qui firent édifier au 12ème siècle un ouvrage défensif en pierres dont ne subsistent que deux tours et une partie de rempart. La tour nord-ouest est spectaculairement éventrée.
D'un point de vue historique, il convient de se souvenir que Pedro de Luna, alors pape Benoît XIII, y trouva refuge en 1403 après avoir fui Avignon.
Actuellement propriété de la ville, les restes du château sont l'objet de soins particuliers et toute la colline par laquelle on y grimpe est joliment paysagée. On peut même y pique-niquer à proximité : bon à savoir !

Racheté par la ville, il est classé monument historique en 19211.

Ne subsiste aujourd'hui de ce château que les tours sud-ouest et nord-ouest (cette dernière étant à moitié détruite dans le sens de la hauteur), ainsi qu'une partie du rempart. Le site, en partie réhabilité, est ouvert au public suivant certains horaires.
