Rue commerçante

Breestraat n'est pas piétonne, mais c'est la Rue commerçante de Leiden, en concurrence avec Haarlemmerstraat. Rue chargée d'histoire que bordent la longue façade Renaissance de l'Hôtel de Ville, ainsi que l'église wallonne.
Après avoir été sillonnée par le tramway, Breestraat voit maintenant passer quelques bus, tandis que la circulation automobile est réglementée.
Entre autres bâtiments remarquables, un édifice classique de deux étages porte la mention "In den vergulden Turk"; il fut construit en 1673 pour la famille LePla, de riches négociants. Au centre du fronton, un oriental en turban marque les échanges commerciaux des LePla avec le Moyen Orient tandis que Neptune et Mercure sont les dieux qui président à leur entreprise.

Au hasard de la rue, on voit une maison de 1607 dont la porte est surmontée du blason de la ville, Les clés de Saint Pierre ; on voit aussi les vitrines d'un diamantaire ou encore une loggia Art Nouveau. Les rez-de-chaussée de ces anciennes demeures sont occupés souvent par des commerces à la dernière mode.
